At Vernon Nagel, Inc., safety isn’t just a requirement — it’s a responsibility, a culture, and a commitment that reaches from leadership to every crew member in the field.

In this Employee Spotlight, we’re proud to highlight Darin Von Lehmden, Safety Director, whose experience, leadership, and people-first approach continue to strengthen VNI’s safety culture across every project.

With more than 20 years of experience in public, private, and federal enforcement sectors, Darin understands that safety is far more than compliance — it’s an ever-evolving profession that demands awareness, preparation, and accountability.

Safety: More Than a Definition

Since the inception of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act of 1970, employers have been legally required to provide safe and healthy work environments. But as Darin explains, safety goes far beyond regulatory obligation.

Through decades of experience, he has learned that safety is dynamic. It requires constant growth, proactive thinking, and a willingness to adapt to changing conditions. When Darin joined Vernon Nagel, he embraced the opportunity to lead a culture rooted in prevention and responsibility — one where safety is not reactive, but intentional.

He credits the leadership team for fully committing to making safety a priority, creating an environment where expectations are clear and support is strong.

Supporting Crews — Every Day

Darin makes himself available to every member of the VNI team — on and off the job site — 24 hours a day. While much of his work happens behind the scenes, that invisible support system plays a critical role in protecting employees in the field.

Each week, he reviews project schedules to prioritize site visits, especially those involving higher-risk activities. His job site presence reinforces communication between leadership and field teams, strengthens hazard recognition, and ensures crews have the guidance they need to complete tasks efficiently and safely.

His approach isn’t just about enforcement — it’s about engagement.

“Hard on Issues, Easy on People”

When asked how VNI manages its safety program, Darin often shares a simple but powerful philosophy:

“Hard on issues, easy on people.”

That mindset reflects the heart of VNI’s safety culture. Employees are the company’s most important asset. By providing the right tools, ongoing education, and constructive feedback, the organization has built a workplace where safety is embraced — not feared.

It’s not unusual for crews to light up when Darin arrives on site — sometimes because they know he might have brought donuts or cookies. That approachable presence reinforces trust and demonstrates that accountability and encouragement can work hand in hand.

Leadership Accountability Matters

A strong safety culture begins at the top. Darin emphasizes that the success of any progressive safety program depends on leadership commitment.

At Vernon Nagel, leadership has fully aligned around shared safety goals, building a foundation of mutual accountability between management and field employees. That alignment not only sets expectations — it builds trust and long-term success.

The Habits That Keep Sites Safe

Darin believes two practices make the biggest difference in maintaining safe job sites:

Pre-Planning

Proactive preparation eliminates unnecessary stress and prevents last-minute decisions that could introduce risk. Pre-planning ensures crews begin each day ready, stable, and confident.

Hazard Recognition

Experience develops awareness. Recognizing risks before they escalate is one of the most valuable skills in construction safety. Darin continues to refine and teach this practice, reinforcing the importance of staying alert and proactive.

Together, these habits create a culture that prioritizes prevention over reaction.

Looking Ahead

Over the past two decades, Vernon Nagel has grown at an impressive pace. In many organizations, rapid growth can strain safety programs — but Darin is confident that VNI’s leadership has ensured the opposite.

By investing in the right tools, training, and resources, the company continues to position safety at the forefront of the construction industry. Darin is excited about the direction the program is heading and the continued progress being made to protect employees across every project.

Beyond the Job Site

Outside of work, Darin is first and foremost a family man.

This fall, he and his wife will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. They are proud parents to Victor (16), an aspiring tennis pro and newly licensed roundabout navigator, and Vivian (14), a dedicated dancer (whose moves Darin proudly claims he taught her) and an expert at judging other roundabout drivers.

Like most teenagers, they rely heavily on technology — and thanks to the infrastructure VNI builds alongside its trade partners, families across communities can depend on reliable systems that keep them connected. It’s meaningful work that impacts not only the public, but Darin’s own family as well.

A Culture Built on Commitment

Safety at Vernon Nagel, Inc. is not just a policy — it’s a promise.

Through steady leadership, proactive planning, and a culture rooted in respect, Darin Von Lehmden continues to lead a program that protects people, strengthens teams, and supports the company’s long-term growth.

And sometimes, he even brings the donuts.
